Vitale Barberis Canonico is proud to present the work of those who, far from fashion catwalks and designer shows, dedicate their lives to the production of the most prized wools in the world. Their success is a reflection of their undeniable passion and skill. Wool Tales puts the spotlight on Australia, highlighting breeders who, through skill and dedication, supply the best possible raw materials. The quality of our final products cannot help but be founded on a search for excellence up and down the supply chain.
In reality, there is a great deal hiding behind the quality of Vitale Barberis Canonico® fabrics, for example numerous professionals who love their jobs and are passionate about their work, putting added value into our final products. The best of these “hidden” professionals – the men and women who produce and classify wool according to the company’s extremely high quality standards – are being recognized and rewarded through a prize Vitale Barberis Canonico created specifically for this purpose: the Wool Excellence Award. Our connection with Australian breeders, who represent the starting point from which everything originated, was further consolidated through foundation of the Vitale Barberis Canonico Wool Excellence Club. This association was designed to bring together and reward quality, creating a direct, individual and long-lasting relationship with individual breeders as part of a circle of virtuous cooperation. The club is founded on four pillars: quality, training, loyalty and sustainability.
Knowing how to recognize and identify the best raw materials requires passion and careful attention, often the result of many years of experience in the field. For this reason, Vitale Barberis Canonico adds a margin to prices based on international market quotes that takes into consideration not only production costs, but pays the breeder an extra sum to compensate him or her for the commitment they’ve made to obtaining the highest quality.
Training means supplying information and motivating people to carry on even when market conditions are difficult. This is why Vitale Barberis Canonico’s experts and wool classers share over 350 years of company techniques and knowledge obtained in the field with breeder members of our club. Training also means dialogue and reciprocal exchanges established in the pursuit of excellence and respect for the environment.
Over the past century, Vitale Barberis Canonico has purchased superfine wools from thousands of farms, paying close attention to continuous quality improvement. Today the company has established a loyalty program for the most virtuous breeders, formally recognizing them as members of a community based on knowledge, exchange and growth in order to further consolidate our relationship over time.
The Wool Excellence Club allows Vitale Barberis Canonico to share and valorize ethical practices for breeding, raising and shearing sheep. The company firmly believes that the concept of sustainability is synonymous with responsibility: for people, the territory and all the goods the land is capable of producing.
On 9 December 2014, the first Vitale Barberis Canonico Wool Excellence Award was given to the Hawksford family, who raise Saxon Merino sheep in Glenburnie. The awards ceremony was held in Sydney, including a dream dinner at The Quay, and was attended by institutional representatives and members of the Australian press.
Through this award, Vitale Barberis Canonico formally recognizes those wool producers who, thanks to their daily efforts and devotion to excellence, supply wools of the highest possible quality. All Australian breeders who have supplied wool to Vitale Barberis Canonico during the wool sales season (from 1 July to 30 June) can compete for the prize. The Wool Excellence Award is also designed to promote the sustainable production of Superfine Saxon® wool, rewarding the best natural conditions and grazing areas, as well as the adoption of correct practices that respect the environment and sheep’s wellbeing, allowing them to graze freely.
